Can You Write 100K words in 100 Days?
For anyone who has tried National Novel Writing Month in November, and for anyone who wanted to but didn’t, there’s a new kid on the block! Sally Quilford has had stories published in most of the major women’s magazines, and had seven pocket novels published My Weekly Pocket Novels which have been sold to Ulverscroft Publishings Linford Romance Library, for large print publication. She has also won and been placed in many competitions.
Sally has set a 100k words in 100 days challenge starting 1st January 2012 – 9th April 2012 – she says “Here’s a new writing initiative for everyone and I hope you’re all going to join in come 1st January 2012. The aim is to write 100k in 100 days. That’s just 1000 words a day. Easy peasy.
You don’t have to be writing a novel. You can write pretty much anything you want, with a few no-nos.
What’s included in the 100k:
- Novels
- Novellas
- Short stories
- Poetry
- Non-fiction (including full length books or articles).
- Guest blog posts (that is commissioned posts for a blog that is not your own).
You may combine your 100k total from any or all of the above.
What’s not included
- Blog posts on your personal blog (sorry, but that’s too easy)
- Blog comments or online discussions
- Twitter posts
- FB status updates
- emails and/or letters to friends and acquaintances.
So basically the 100k needs to be creative writing, whether you’re writing a novel, short story, poem or an article about the things you know best.
Now I’m not NaNoWriMo. I don’t have any fancy gadgets or icons or anything. Basically I’m just asking you to work then report back here regularly on how you’re doing (I’ll set up a word count page nearer the time) and we can all cheer each other on. I’m hoping, as with May You Write Your Novel last year, I can persuade a friend or two to write a guest post on my blog.
If you’re interested in taking part, let me know below and put 1st January in your diary as the day you decide to start writing 100k worth of creative writing! We’ll use the twitter hashtag #100k1oodays to discuss it and I’ve set up an events page on Facebook.
What you can do with 100k words
Sally is a monthly columnist with Writers Forum magazine and has also had articles published in The New Writer. Sally lives in Derbyshire with her husband and four westies. When the weather is nice enough she writes in her shed, hence her own ‘publisher’ on her Kindle ebook being labelled ‘Tales From the Shed’. Her proudest moment so far, not counting the birth of her children and the day she married, was when the King of Twitter, Stephen Fry linked to her (old) blog from his Twitter page, describing her as ‘pleasantly sane’.
Worth a shot? I think so – link up to Sally at her Facebook page and see if you can write 100k in 100 days!
