Fabulous Free Events at Bram Stoker Festival
Inkwell are involved in programming the literary strand for the inaugural Bram Stoker Festival, and there are some fabulous events!
THE ANATOMY OF FEAR – PATRICIA CORNWELL – FROM STOKER TO SCARPETTA
Location: Edmund Burke Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin
Patricia Cornwell, whose bestselling novels have elevated her to the highest rank of international crime writing, will discuss ways in which the serial killer has become, in some sense, a modern-day equivalent of the vampire. Fear is the currency of the contemporary crime writer just as it was for the writers of Victorian gothic fiction. Bram Stoker’s Dracula exploited the Victorians’ dread of the supernatural just as the crime thriller excites our fear of sudden murderous violence. By comparing characters, plots and stories to her own Scarpetta books, the author will illuminate those dark corners of the human psyche which, regardless of time and place, harbour and nourish our deepest human fears.
Patricia Cornwell’s latest novel in the Scarpetta series, Bone Bed, is published in October and she will be signing copies of the book after the event.

ST ANN’S: THE CHURCH IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
Location: St. Ann’s Church, Dawson Street, Dublin 2 Fri Oct 26th
St Ann’s church is one of the hidden ecclesiastical jewels of inner city Dublin. Erected c.1720 to an Italian design by Dublin architects, today it’s neo-Romanesque facade fashioned by T.N. Deane in the 1860s, is a striking and familiar presence on the Dawson Street streetscape. Many notable parishioners have been baptised, married and buried at St Ann’s, but perhaps the best known is Abraham (Bram) Stoker, the author of the gothic novel, Dracula, who was married there in 1878. His bust and marriage certificate will form centre-pieces of an exhibition of the history and life of St Ann’s to be launched as part of the centenary celebrations of Bram Stoker’s death on Friday 26 October 2012.

BLOOD RED INK

Focused writing workshop with double Children’s Books award-winner Celine Kiernan. Celine will take you through the basic essentials of brilliant fiction writing that they don’t teach you in school. Find out how important character is to every story, how to plot and plan, and how fantasy and horror stories, like Dracula, play on societies fears for maximum effect. Join Celine at the Bram Stoker weekend to hear about publishing opportunities and what it is to be a writer. In an intensive 3 hour workshop Celine will take you through the basic essentials of brilliant fiction writing that they don’t teach you in school.

BATTY HABITS AND SPOOKY STORY-MAKING

Hugely popular interactive workshop for 8 – 11yrs First learn the truth about native Irish bats and the connection to vampires from RTÉ’s Dale Treadwell, before author illustrator Oisin McGann reveals just how batty you need to be to create a vampire-inspired story in pictures. With audience participation, Oisin will show you how to create and develop a spooky storyboard of your own!

NIGHTMARE AT SMOCK ALLEY

Gather round, gather round, this will be a thrilling and terrifying evening of tall tales from young adult authors Oisin McGann, Will Hill and Derek Landy. Hosted by RTÉ Elev8’s Diana Bunici, she will find out what actually scares these scary story men! The perfect way to get in the mood for Halloween!

About the Authors
Derek Landy is the author of the phenomenally successful Skulduggery Pleasant, which won the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book of the Decade Award and the Red House Children’s Book Award. His second book Playing With Fire, won an Irish Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year. Other titles include The Faceless Ones and The End of the World.
Will Hill is the author of the phenomenally successful series of books for teenagers Department 19. The second in the series, The Rising, was published in 2012 and a third is due for March 2013
Oisin McGann is the prolific author of innumerable books and series for children. These include The Mad Grandad Series, The Forbidden Files Series and the most recent teen novel, Merciless Reason.

FATAL ATTRACTION: WHAT IS IT WITH VAMPIRES?

The Vampire motif seems to be everywhere these days, in teen fiction (Twilight), television (The Vampire Diaries, True Blood) and movies (where do you start?). Teenagers, from Goths to geeks, emos to metalheads, can’t get enough, but is it all innocent fantasy? How ambiguous are the underlying messages about love and sexuality, dominance and submission? To what extent is Bram Stoker’s Dracula the template for all of this? An expert panel ponders what’s really at stake. With moderator Edel Coffey and panelists Anna Carey, Will Hill, Celine Kiernan.

WHAT LIES BENEATH: DRACULA AND ITS LEGACY?
Location: Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin 2 Sun Oct 28th
Hidden beneath the surface of this Gothic tale, contemporary fears of modernity, sexual freedom and the mysterious East abound. Modern scholars and Stokerites discuss the effect of Stoker’s legacy on literature, and how society’s fears manifest in the darkest of tales. Apart from being a masterpiece of the Gothic horror novel, Dracula has been described as a “coded Victorian diary” and while there is ample textual evidence to support such a claim, analytical theories have ranged from the astute to the deranged. The panel will attempt to separate the two, examining the conflicting elements in the nature and sexuality of an extremely complex man – Bram Stoker, creator of Dracula.
Featuring Dr. Jarlath Killeen, Paul Murray, Ruth Dudley Edwards, Senator David Norris.
