If you’re thinking of submitting to Mslexia’s 2014 Short Story Competition, they’ve commissioned a series of writing workshops by Louise Doughty specially designed to tickle your creativity and give your short story an edge in the competition.

Mslexia be publishing a new workshop on their website every week until the competition closing date, but to whet your appetite look at the website now for workshops one-three – all about finding imaginative ways to start and shape a story. The whole series of workshops will be available on their writing workshops page over the next few weeks.

The competition’s first prize is £2,000 – one of the biggest prizes available in the genre – and includes two optional extras: a week’s retreat at the home of early women’s writing, Chawton House Library, and a day with a Virago editor. Other winners will receive a share of the remaining £1,050 prize pot, and all of the winning stories will be published in the June 2014 issue of Mslexia.

Our judge this year is the award-winning novelist, short story author and scriptwriter Jane Rogers. The closing date for the competition is 17 March 2014, so there’s still plenty of time to get your story submission-ready. If you would like a little extra inspiration, you can now listen to the haunting and moving 2012 winning story, ‘What goes around’ by Tamsin Cottis, at Short Story Radio.
