Free-to-watch-live Online Writers Workshop: Writing for Children & YA

On Saturday September 28th, Writers Web TV will be officially launching with their very first free-to-watch-live  online writing workshop.

Finding the Magic: Writing for Children and Young Adults will teach you how to conjure stories that children and teenagers will love. The workshop will be streamed live on www.writerswebtv.com.

An expert panel of writing, illustration, publishing and animation professionals will explain each aspect of the colourful business of children’s fiction. Led by our chief instructor Vanessa O’Loughlin of Writing.ie, the authors will be joined in studio by a brave panel of aspiring writers who will work on writing exercises throughout the day. Take a look at the trailer here:

You can take part

But they’re not the only ones who will get to work on their writing. You can participate online, watch the discussions and chat with us during the day over Facebook and Twitter. We’ll put your questions to the panel who will give you all the tools to write a great book for children.

Sign up with your email address at writerswebtv.com and we’ll send you all you need to know about enrollment.

Who are the authors?

Marie Louise Fitzpatrick is a multi-award winning picture book author and illustrator, who decided she wanted to be an artist when she was four and never looked back. Her work includes some of the most recognisable and well-loved children’s books such as I’m a Tiger Too, There and I Am I.

Marie Louise will be joined by Michael Emberley who has been writing and illustrating children’s books since 1979. They will outline all you need to know about writing books for young children, and how to get your story into the hands of young readers.

We all love cartoons. Some of our most memorable stories are told through animation and Norton Virgien, – who directed Henry Hugglemonster and Doc McStuffins, two of Brown Bag Films‘ most successful animations – will let us in on secrets about how to write for animation, and what film companies are looking for.

And then, onto the business nuts and bolts. Polly Nolan is a Literary Agent and has seen all ends of the spectrum during her tenure as editorial director of Macmillan Children’s Books and in her current role. Polly will tell you how to create a really great book that publishers will love, and how to make sure that your story, plot and characters are age-appropriate for your target readers.

Oisín McGann is a bestselling Irish author and illustrator who writes science fiction and fantasy for children and teenagers. Fantasy is one of the biggest-selling genres in children’s literature, and Oisín will be delighted to show you how to get the register right when writing fantasy books.

We all remember favourite characters that we treasured from our early storybooks. Meg Rosoff, an American-born, London-based multi-award winning writer will go through characterisation and how to create a personality that children will feel they really know.

This stellar cast of children’s lit professionals will be facilitated by Vanessa O’Loughlin, who as well as being our chief instructor, is a publishing consultant, literary scout and author.
