This course is for writers who want to learn the rudiments of journalism.  It will teach you how to source ideas; how to develop the ideas and pitch them to editors; how to research an article; how to interview; and how to construct and write a clear, accurate feature.

In four modules, you will receive lectures by email, with tips and suggestions, and you will be given an exercise with each module, ending in the writing of an article. Along the way you will receive tips on how to organise your day, and how to maximise your income.

Sue Leonard has made a living out of freelance journalism for over fifteen years, dealing with up to twenty editors a year. She writes for The Irish Examiner, The Irish Independent, and many other publications. A former columnist with The Evening Herald, she currently writes the weekly ‘Beginner’s Pluck’ book column for The Irish Examiner.

Sue taught Freelance Journalism at The West Cork Literary Festival, and has given numerous guest lectures. In 2010, she published Keys to the Cage with New Island Press. She’s also a bestselling Ghost Writer who works regularly with several leading publishing houses.

Course Content in Detail

Module 1: Sourcing Ideas for Articles.

Ideas come from everywhere. This module explains how to spot a good idea; how to develop it, and pitch it to the appropriate publication.  It will also cover dealing with editors.

Module 2: How to Research.

 How to access information; who to talk to; and how to keep your research relevant to the feature. This module will also cover the importance of networking to gain more contacts, and the short phone interview.

Module 3: How to Interview.

Setting up an interview, being prepared, avoiding the pitfalls, and writing it up afterwards

Module 4: Structuring and Writing a Feature Article.

 All writing tells a story, but there’s a specific craft in feature writing. This module will emphasise the importance of clarity, accuracy, readability, writing to length, and meeting deadlines.
