Our CHALLENGE STARTS ON Monday 3rd August 2020
Once payment is received, you’ll be taken to a page that gives you tips for making the most of the challenge and a link to the private Facebook group. You will be admitted to the group at 3pm on Friday 31st July – the challenge will start on Monday 3rd August – get ready! Places are limited so don’t leave yours to chance.
This challenge is hosted by Vanessa Fox O’Loughlin, aka Number One bestselling author Sam Blake, and journalist and NLP coach Maria McHale.
What happens during the 5 Day Challenge?
This 5 Day Challenge will focus on the life blood of great fiction – character.
Each day there will be one daily task, this will take between 10-20 minutes to complete (you can devote as much time as you wish). Paste your piece into the appropriate section and you will see how your fellow writers have approached the same challenge. Read, enjoy and critique the individual pieces alongside Sam Blake who will also be giving on the spot feedback on a broad selection of each day’s entries.
Running for 5 days from the 3rd to the 7th of August 2020, this challenge is guaranteed to get you writing and this time we’re focusing on the life blood of all fiction: character.
To truly make your characters work, you need a thorough understanding of who they are and what is driving them. That’s the objective of this challenge – to get to the heart of your work, to make you think and to show you how to improve your writing technique at the same time.
We’re going to help you get up close and personal with character development tasks that will breathe life into your stories. This challenge’s character tasks will help you work out how to create characters we can fall in love with, you’ll find out how to define who your characters are, what makes them tick and what motivates them so that you can bring them truly to life.
Leave your work in progress on the backburner for a few days and take a fresh look at how you approach your story, we’ll be getting you to roll up your sleeves and showing you techniques to really bring your fictional characters to life! Stretch your creative wings and expand your writing skills with peer and mentor critique, plus exercises that will get your imagination sparking. This challenge aims to help you create characters that get noticed, as well as boost your motivation.

Who are we?

Maria McHale is a journalist and communications consultant and works with clients who want to get noticed and tell their story – from entrepreneurs to emerging authors – she writes regularly for the Irish Times and has written for most of the leading UK newspapers and magazines too.
Together we run the Writers Ink community, for writers of any genre, connecting you with other writers experiencing the same challenges. The group has a monthly subscription and offers peer support and mentoring to members, curated resources will help you improve your writing. Members get accurate industry standard advice and help. A weekly AMA addresses specific concerns on problem areas, and a wide range of expert guests to give you the best advice available. Members can post writing samples to get feedback and encouragement from their peers, and expert advice from Vanessa. We can tell you more about it at the end of the challenge.
What does it cost?
The 5 day challenge has a one off payment of €35.
The 5 Day Challenge includes 5 daily tasks with tips sheets and bonus content daily to kickstart your writing and hone your skills. Via exclusive video, through discussion and critique, we’ve got tons of info for you. Vanessa and Maria will be live on Facebook every evening to discuss the task and answer your questions in 5 x one hour sessions. They are all recorded so you can watch back if you aren’t able to join in.
